Last Friday the Floating City won the NCRV Climate Show. The team of students from Delft University of Technology presented their solution ‘The Floating City’ with huge enthusiasm. And this came over clearly to the panel of judges. The Floating City contributes towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and is also a solution to the increasing problem of flooding. The Floating City also won the Delta Competition in 2006. This week sees the start of Royal Haskoning’s worldwide competition for the second time.
The Delta Competition was organized for the first time in 2006. In that year Royal Haskoning also celebrated its 125th anniversary. The 2006 Delta Competition was won by the Floating City, a team from Delft University of Technology led by Rutger de Graaf: ‘The Delta Competition is an extremely good initiative. It has stirred up things among students, challenged people to think about things and to do things that would not otherwise be picked up.’ In 2006 the Floating City won the prize because of its originality, a good and scientifically detailed basis and a well thought-out, practical and implementable design. In 2008 students from all over the world will again be challenged to take part in the Delta Competition. With this second Delta Competition Royal Haskoning is on the lookout for new, inspiring and daring adaptation strategies and solutions for the impact of climate change in the world’s deltas. The 2008 Delta Competition is open to bachelors, masters and PhD students throughout the world. Registration for the competition opens in January 2008. Papers must be submitted before 1 August 2008. An international panel of judges will select the best individual paper (prize €5000) and the best team paper (€10,000), and the best papers will be published
