The 2008 Delta Competition: international character underlined

09/04/2008

Registration for the 2008 Delta Competition closed on 3 April with 64 entries—31 team entries and 33 individual registrations—from 14 countries worldwide.

Students were able to sign up for the 2008 Delta Competition from 1 January 2008. Royal Haskoning, which set up this competition, wants to focus on the future and ask the future generation for its input in the search for sustainable solutions for the problems—and also the opportunities—that climate change brings with it in densely populated delta areas. Royal Haskoning wants to encourage students to come up with innovative ideas and daring strategies.

The far-flung corners of the world from which entries have come are surprising. Every part of the world except for South America is represented. From China to Canada, from Nigeria to Sweden. The international character of the 2008 Delta Competition could not be clearer. The entries come from students studying a wide range of subjects. Aside from the familiar and expected faculties such as the natural sciences, civil engineering and earth sciences, there are entries from other faculties including business studies, social and historical sciences, and from business administration students majoring in marketing and international business.

The registered teams have until 1 August 2008 to submit papers. A professional, international panel of judges will assess the entries for originality, their scientific basis, reality and practicability. The best papers will be compiled and published. The winner of this competition will be announced at the Royal Haskoning Delta Competition Award Ceremony in November 2008.
