Andy Harvey, 34
Maritime Engineer, BSc Civil Engineering & Environmental Technology, MICE
When and why did you join Royal Haskoning?
I joined in 2001 as I wanted international exposure and design experience.
Has this happened?
Definitely, I have been involved in some major design projects both in the UK and overseas, I became a Class 3 Commercial Diver whilst on a project in South Africa and also spent 8 months in India and Pakistan.
What sort of projects have you been involved in?
Many, large and small. I’m currently Project Manager for Cairnryan Port Development which involves co-ordination of staff, documentation, designs, budget and timescales. Other projects include diving inspections for Ports & Harbours around the World. When in India I was Assistant Resident Engineer for marine works associated with a new Naval Base, and also Landguard quay repairs at Felixstowe to name a few. The great thing about it is you never know what’s around the corner and often work on several projects at once in different capacities.
What about personal development?
I’m a very determined and confident individual who loves a challenge and needs variety. Royal Haskoning has given me challenges on a daily basis. I have a high level of responsibility both in management and design. You see the quality of work from highly skilled professionals and that sets the standard for excellence.
Career aspirations?
The Company has given me an excellent range of experience enabling me to complete my ICE training and sit my professional review and became a chartered engineer.
I aim to expand on my diving works for the Company and I recently joined the talent development programme to improve my business acumen and management skills.
What’s been your worst moment?
Being stuck in the desert in Pakistan! I had a valid ticket but got bumped off the plane! But that’s the beauty of international travel, you get to experience different ways and cultures first hand!
