Thanks to our global network and our broad expertise we assisted our client in assessing the business consequences of the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) issues associated with its potential acquisitions in 9 different countries.
Scope of work
Scope of the Due Diligence included: contaminated land, water, air, waste, workspace impacts, hazardous substances in buildings, static of buildings and cranes, and electrical system safety. Each of these issues was assessed through the review of existing data, site visits and interviews performed by a complementary team of international and national experts. For 10 of the sites, further investigations were carried out, which consisted in the analysis of soil samples and included, for some of the sites, the analysis of groundwater, wastewater and waste samples and the inspection of the site by additional experts (e.g. IPPC/BAT air emission control advisor, asbestos specialist).
Results
- Assessment of compliance to national legislation and, for the sites located within the EU, to the relevant European Directives. For the sites located in countries where soil quality standards were absent, the Dutch standards were used.
- Assessment of the main HSE risks which, even though they are not covered by the applicable legislation, could seriously harm the health or life of employees or cause environmental pollution, either now or in the near future.
- Check of off-site liabilities.
- Estimation of the costs for necessary corrective measures based on local price level.
