The Maas project involved the inner-urban redevelopment of the area between the market and the western bank of the river the Maas in the city of Maastricht. The development consists of a four-storied underground car parking station, with a shopping centre and offices allocated for governmental housing found above it. Furthermore, a tunnel will be constructed under the 400 meter long boulevard which runs along the Maas. From this tunnel, underground facilities will be available for easy access to the shopping centre and the government offices. In addition, the tunnels will accommodate separate entry and exit lanes in and out of the garage. As a result, the middle section of the tunnel will consist of two levels.
The Wilhelmina Bridge has a new connection to the western bank of the Maas at the same level as the tunnel roof.
For this project, Royal Haskoning was responsible for the design and supervision during the realization of the tunnel and the adjustments to the bridge. This applies to both the civil engineering as well as the technical design. Aside from the complex geometry, special aspects of the tunnel included the unique composition of the foundation which consisted of limestone and gravel, the position along the Maas, and the ventilation provisions.
For the technical aspects of this project, we were responsible for the provision of energy, lighting, fluid drainage, ventilation, fire safety, communications and operations.
