The realization of the A4-south between Dinteloord and Bergen op Zoom could give a significant impulse to the western regions of Noord-Brabant. Royal Haskoning was commissioned by the province of Noord-Brabant to research what the consequences would be to the economy, spatial development and traffic if the A4-south was actually realized.
Amongst others, the research focused on accessibility along with the cohesive development potential, traffic safety and environmental quality. In addition, the opportunities for local and regional development in the area surrounding the A4-south, in particular the municipalities of Bergen op Zoom, Steenbergen and Tholen, were simultaneously investigated.
Two exploration methods were followed during this investigation, a layered approach and an integral approach. This particular project has given Royal Haskoning the unique opportunity to allow several different fields of work to interact together and to encourage administrators to look further than arbitrary municipal, provincial and country borders in order to reach a combined vision on the opportunities and problems associated with such a measure.
