Alignment study for the N280-A52

client name: Province of Limburg
year: 2005
client type: Government
location: Limberg, The Netherlands
expertise: Road alignment, environmental impact, design

The secondary road N280 (in the Netherlands) / B230 (in Germany) intersects the Dutch National Highway A73-South at the town of Roermond and connects to the German National Highway A52 near the towns of Niederkrüchten/Elmpt and continues to Mönchengladbach. This road is part of the Trans European Highway Network. The current road however, does not provide sufficient capacity and does not meet the required traffic safety standards.

The Dutch province of Limburg and the German “Strassenbauverwalt NWR” asked Royal Haskoning to investigate and provide advice on upgrading the present secondary road N68/B230 to highway standards including an assessment of alternative routes for the new 2x2 lane highway, where the N68 would be maintained as a parallel road.

Royal Haskoning combined the road study with a Dutch/German Environmental Impact Assessment to execute the investigation.
After an extended regional survey, an analysis was made of the so called “relative low conflict corridors.” These corridors form the basis for planned road sections.

Preliminary designs were made of possible alternatives, taking into account the impact on several factors including; traffic, spatial planning, economy, quality of life (noise, air quality, climate, and safety) as well as environment (landscape, nature, and water).
