For the motorways found in the Netherlands, a Traffic Signal System was implemented, a project that is part of the Dynamic Traffic Management Program of the Dutch government. Royal Haskoning was commissioned to realize and manage this project.
The project included making designs and specifications for the traffic signal systems on different parts of the Dutch motorways. The traffic control systems were set up in several locations to monitor various points on Dutch motorway, specifically for motorways A1/A28/A50, one for A2/A76, and one for A58/A2.
These Traffic Signal Systems provide motorists with actual information on traffic volumes, speeds, and congestion. The idea is to be able to provide automatic incident detection and warning, efficient and safe management of road works, smoothing out of traffic flows, and reducing the possibilities of serious traffic accidents.
Royal Haskoning advised and consulted on how the systems were to be set up in terms of electrical services, planning, and lay-out, and also provided the write up of tender documents.
