The secondary road N280 (in the Netherlands) / B230 (in Germany) intersects the Dutch National Highway A73-South at the town of Roermond and connects to the German National Highway A52 near the towns of Niederkrüchten/Elmpt and continues to Mönchengladbach. This road is part of the Trans European Highway Network. The current road, however, does not provide for sufficient capacity and does not meet the required traffic safety standards.
The Dutch province of Limburg and the German “Strassenbauverwalt NWR” asked Royal Haskoning to investigate and provide advice on upgrading the present secondary road N68/B230 to highway standards including an assessment of alternative routes for the new 2x2 lane highway, where the N68 would be maintained as a parallel road. In a separate project, Royal Haskoning combined the road study with a Dutch/German Environmental Impact Assessment to execute the investigation.
Based on the results, the Province of Limburg selected a route and asked Royal Haskoning to provide the design and engineering for the 3,5-km long Netherlands section of the new 2x2 stroke highway.
The project included the final design of the road, several viaducts as well as several structures required from a water management perspective. Other services that were required included traffic management, geotechnics, ecology and foundation engineering.
