The “Betuweroute” is one of the priority projects being realized for the European Union under the Trans European Network (TEN). The newly designed freight line, measuring 160-km long, will stretch across the Netherlands, linking Rotterdam’s busy port to the existing German rail network located at the Dutch/German border. The new connection will facilitate the movement of maritime freight to and from the international Port of Rotterdam.

The project involves upgrading approximately 48-km of existing track (The Port Railway Line) and 112-km of newly constructed double track (from Kijfhoek to Zevenaar). This vast project includes the construction of a noise barrier with a total length of 160-km, 5 tunnels with a combined length of 18-km, 7,5-km of suspended alignment, approximately 130 bridges/viaducts with a combined length of 12-km, 80,000 sleepers for the 48-km existing track and 185,000 sleepers for the new 112-km double track, and 16 million m³ of sand for the earth works.

Royal Haskoning has been one of the main engineering consultants for this project and has provided an array of services in the Field of Civil Engineering, Environmental Management, and Architectural Design.
