For the event called ‘Luxury and Decadence‘ at the Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen, the Centre of Architecture Nijmegen has created, with the cooperation of main sponsor Royal Haskoning, a special theme on the architectural development in the city of Dubai from 10th of September to 26th of October 2008.
Dubai is one the fastest growing cities in the world. The city continues to expand in both a horizontal and a vertical sense. It is a city in which architectural fantasies become reality and where luxury knows no boundaries. At some points it might be seen as a symbol decadence, but for sure most of the objects that are built, represent the latest innovations of environmental technology. Royal Haskoning is one of the foreign partners involved in contributing to one of the most impressive construction sites in the world.
How could a dry place in the desert have become such a remarkable city?
No earlier than in 1830, a first settlement was created in Dubai. It started out as a small fishing town. Because the soil wasn’t too fertile, the people chose the sea as their main source of survival. Fishing, diving for pearls and trading in general became their main activities. In 1870, Dubai became the primary gateway to the Gulf Area. Eventually, Dubai has developed itself into a dream-city for tourists and the ultimate definition of real-estate.
Royal Haskoning plays an important role in the general development of Dubai, due to its extended knowledge and skills concerning architecture and water. The exposition displays several of the overwhelming and redefining projects in Dubai.
