A hospital with a own identity
Royal Haskoning will be designing the new building of the Gelre Hospital in Zutphen. With Royal Haskoning Gelre has chosen for one company for the entire design and building process. The team of Royal Haskoning is completed supplemented by architects from Wiegerinck Architecten, an agency with a lot of experience in designing Hospitals. For the extra urban expertise and the establishment of the whole site, the urban design agency Kuiper Compagnons is involved to the project.
The design is based on an ‘inside-out’ philosophy and has distinctive designated area’s for the diversity of functions. It has a ‘Hot Floor’ with the technical healthcare functions like operating rooms and laboratories and a ‘Hotel’ with patient rooms and polyclinics and offices. This allocation also allows for the continuation of services on the existing hot floor while the new one is built next to it, and its demolition when the new is completed.
The building process is phased and will be flexible and built over time. New extensions for additional functions are still possible during the length of the project.
The plan is designed from the inside and has a clear separation of functions in a Hot floor, with the technical hospital functions like operating rooms and laboratories, and a hotel with the patient rooms, the polyclinic and offices. This separation makes it possible to build a new Hot floor next to the current Hot floor, which can be demolished when the new Hot floor is built. The rest of the hospital will be more flexible and built for a longer period. There is also a possibility to extend the building and make new entrances to house other functions in the hospital.
The new hospital will have a strong identity with striking appearance and will become a landmark for the city of Zutphen. The Hot floor will have a technical appearance by the use of a glass 2nd skin façade. This forms a contrast with the other building parts, which will be made of stone and wood. Visitors will be able to park almost in front of the main entrance by using the parking space that is partially under the ‘Hot floor’ and the entrance deck.
