Water treatment

People need water for cooking and drinking, for household use and in industry. To that end water is extracted from groundwater, river water and seawater and is treated. Used water has to be purified before it is discharged. Independent integrated water systems are often designed for use in industry. Royal Haskoning also advises on the granting of permits for discharging used water.

Waste water
Royal Haskoning has designed dozens of large and small water purification plants and managed their construction, both at home and abroad. All the necessary technical, structural, electrical, mechanical and automation knowledge is available in-house. Royal Haskoning also has its own biochemical patent for radical phosphate and nitrate removal. Royal Haskoning has knowledge of and experience in anaerobic and aerobic purification, biological, chemical and biochemical, bio-membrane plants, sand filters and halophyte filters.

Drinking water
Bringing drinking water to the people requires significant investments in extraction, production and distribution. Royal Haskoning assists water companies in identifying sources of water, the technical design of the purification process, the structural, electrical and mechanical design, automation and the building of production plants, and in the design and building of the distribution network.

Industry water
Mains water is often too expensive or not available for industrial use. Great savings can often be made in industry through the sophisticated use and reuse of water. Royal Haskoning has great expertise and experience in all types of industries, such as metal, chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical, foodstuffs, dairy products and drink, tank storage and transhipment, the paper and textile industry. Haskoning has done a great deal of work for tanneries abroad.

Pumping stations
The greater part of the Netherlands lies below sea level. In 1881, Royal Haskoning’s first contract was the design of a pumping-station. Since then Royal Haskoning has designed many polder and sewage plants, from small ones with as little as a 1 m3/s flow to large ones with a flow of 50 m3/s that can raise the water tens of metres. We have experience in different types of pumps and Archimedes screws. All the necessary knowledge in the areas of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, hydraulics and automation is available in-house.

Water economics & institutions
As well as its knowledge of the technology, Royal Haskoning knows about the institutional aspects of water management. Economists and management consultants work together with technicians to achieve institutional improvements. These are improvements to do with the organization of water boards, the organization of water users, improving the operations of (state-owned) water or sewage companies or privatizing them, or preparing large investment projects.

Sewage
The development of sustainable water systems is a fascinating but difficult challenge. Royal Haskoning not only come up with bold and well thought out designs and environmental analyses, but also supervise the entire process needed to configure a water system as efficiently and effectively as possible.
From a broader perspective we scrutinize every aspect of the collection and transport of wastewater, resulting in socially acceptable services that will satisfy you and all other interested parties.
