client type: water board
location: the Netherlands

Royal Haskoning managed the Tiel West Wastewater Transport System project (ATS) for the Rivierenland District Water Board.

In the area to the west of Tiel six sewage pumping-stations have been adapted and one new one has been built. At the same time around 3 km of high-pressure pipes were installed.

During the renovation of the pumping-stations all the mechanical and electrical plant was replaced and the telemetry now also satisfies the most up-to-date requirements.

The pumping-stations’ capacities are as follows:

• Tiel 2,134 m3/h
• Heesselt 23 m3/h
• Varik 84 m3/h (new build)
• Waddenoyen 48 m3/h
• Ophemert 181 m3/h
• Zoelen 162 m3/h
• Kapel Avezaath 122 m3/h

In order to realize the project for the Rivierenland District Water Board Royal Haskoning performed the following services:

• Research
• Preliminary design
• Final design
• Architecture
• Permitting
• Specifications
• Tendering and allocation
• Supervision during the building
• Completion

The photo shows the Varik pumping station. This pumping-station was pre-fabricated and ‘hung’ on piles in an excavation. Because of this there was no need for lengthy groundwater extraction, and as a result there has been no environmental disruption and costs have been saved.
