Over the last few years Royal Haskoning has been closely involved with the Berenplaat Water Treatment Expansion (UZB) project: from the research phase up to and including the completion of the new surface water treatment plant including such things as UV disinfection and active carbon filtration. The Berenplaat production site with a capacity of 18,000 m3/h is the largest drinking water treatment plant in the Netherlands. In the 1990s it became clear that traditional purification based on disinfection with sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine) would have to be adapted to comply with new legislation. From trial research conducted by Royal Haskoning on a scale of 200 m3/h it was concluded that treatment with UV disinfection is a very good alternative to disinfection with sodium hypochlorite.
The design and the specification phase were started in 2003. Evides asked Royal Haskoning to take care of, among other things, the project management, the mechanical engineering design and the design of all of the chemical plants, including the chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide, sulphuric acid and oxygen feeds. After supporting the European tendering process, Royal Haskoning has been responsible for checking the contractors’ detailed engineering and supervising the implementation. A successful and very fast construction period meant that the treatment plant could be started up in the spring of 2005. During this start-up phase Royal Haskoning was responsible for coordinating all the testing.
The new drinking water plant came on stream in November 2005, and as a result the Rijnmond area is being supplied with better quality drinking water.
