In the framework of the Berenplaat Treatment Expansion project (UZB) research is being carried out on a new treatment scheme. Since the start of 1999 until now Royal Haskoning has been in charge of the 200 m3/hr pilot plant.

The pilot plant contains the complete treatment process (micro screens, dosage measurement, flocculent filtration, filters, ozone, active carbon filtration and post-disinfection), and is used as verification and determination of the process design and basis for the dimensioning. In addition the treatment process, in particular, is being examined further in terms of operational management aspects. Royal Haskoning is providing the project leader and also a number of test supervisors. The research programme is being compiled annually in close collaboration with Evides. Attention has also been given to UV technology as a disinfection step since April 2000.

The efficiency (log reduction) of UV disinfection is being researched with the help of a full-scale UV plant (3000 m3/hr) based on bioassays. This plant also serves as a verification of design and operational parameters.
