The composition and quantity of wastewater from tank terminals are variable. As a result of an increased level of activity at these terminals, there can sometimes be problems, such as discharge excesses in regard to surface water or sewers. Royal Haskoning has made improvements to the wastewater systems of a number of tank terminals in the Netherlands. These upgrades range in scope from revamping the current wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to applying for a new discharge permit).

First of all the existing situation is reviewed. This includes studying analyses, WWTP process steps, the technical condition of the WWTP and the discharge permit. During this review the key problems are thoroughly examined and the possible causes are investigated in detail. Laboratory testing, such as jar tests, often provide a better understanding of the quality and behaviour of the wastewater.

After the review, consideration is given to the future situation. This relates to such factors as wastewater composition and volume, the contribution represented by rainwater, and legislative changes (like the European Water Framework Directive).

An improvement plan is drawn up using all the available information and insights. This plan is client specific and can vary from utilizing innovative and more effective treating process operating methods to an expansion or the complete replacement of the wastewater treatment plant. Royal Haskoning is also available to act as an intermediary in the application for new discharge permits. Finally, Royal Haskoning can play a key role in the implementation of technical changes or expansions, and also optimization during start-up and normal operation.
