Masterplan Infrastructure for Electrical Power Distribution Maasvlakte2
Port of Rotterdam
Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Plants and process installations
The Port of Rotterdam is developing a large scale extension of the existing harbour area Maasvlakte. This extension, named Maasvlakte 2, will increase the available area for commercial use with 1000 ha. Main activities in this area will be container terminal operations and (petro-) chemical industries.
First operations on Maasvlakte 2 are scheduled to start in the year 2013.
The Masterplan for Electrical Power Distribution contains starting points and the basic design for the high voltage power distribution grid that will be rolled out over
Maasvlakte 2.
In the year 2007 the Port of Rotterdam appointed Royal Haskoning as the consultant to participate in the Masterplan, for technical concepts, financial evaluations and review of input from other parties.
Key items are: grid configuration, reliability, power consumption figures, most economic voltage levels, flexibility for the future extensions, operational costs and the impact of the various options on the environment.
Based on specific experience with the engineering and construction of high voltage grids Royal Haskoning made an overview of all available options with their advantages and risks.
Costs and time schedule were estimated for each option. In close cooperation with the local power distribution company all options were assessed, which resulted in a clear advice to the Port of Rotterdam.
