Petrochemicals company Petroplus has a storage terminal in Milford Haven. Royal Haskoning designed a biological wastewater treatment plant for this site. Royal Haskoning also helped Petroplus with the implementation of the system.
The wastewater to be treated has a high salt content, and in order to get higher conversions it is preheated using waste heat. The plant has a capacity of 200 m3/h and consists of two bioreactors and a sludge separator. The bioreactors were built from existing petrol storage tanks. The sludge is separated by means of a flotation unit (DAF).

Petroplus has been able to achieve wastewater treatment at an attractive price by making partial use of the existing infrastructure.
