Consultants of Royal Haskoning from all disciplines- among which urban planning, Environment, Traffic & Transport and Harbour planning- work together on a master plan for the development of a new metropole named Suhar. The new sea harbour will form the centre of all plans.
A few years ago, the Omanese Government has started a development plan for a new sea harbour on a strategic location in the south east of the Arabic peninsula. The harbour and the city are close to the economic centres of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, by ship it takes a full day to reach. The sultan therefore started a joint venture (Suhar Industiral Port Company) with The Port of Rotterdam to create the metropole Suhar for half a million inhabitants and a huge sea harbour including international Airport.
At the moment our multi-disciplinary team advises the harbour authorities on the master plan. “A fantastic project!”, according to Thijs the Bruin, one of the consultants. “You do not get a chance every day to create such a huge urban area out of a desert.”
