The acid tar ponds with a surface of five hectares have been investigated, and it was decided to remediate the ponds.
Remediation included:
• excavating the acid tar,
• immobilize the acid tar in a immobilization facture at site,
• construct a bottom line,
• landfill of the immobilized acid tar;
• construct a final capping.
The project included waste characterization, ground water investigations, risk analysis, remediation plans, geotechnical surveys, design, tender documents and supervision.
