VAR decided in 1997 to conduct a feasibility study and landfill sanitation plan to convert 8.5 hectares of a municipal dumpsite into a sanitary landfill. Royal Haskoning prepared the necessary remediation and working plans to receive a permit from the regional authority. The waste mining project, including sieving and separation of recyclables, has been carried out between 1998 and 2007.
Royal Haskoning was responsible for monitoring of the soil and groundwater after remediation of each landfill cell. We prepared design and contract documents for the new landfill cells, and carried out the supervision of the landfill cell construction.

VAR executed the waste mining and waste separation with own equipment, and excavated 950.000 tons of municipal waste.

Royal Haskoning concluded the project with an evaluation report which is submitted to the regional authority for approval.
