Water and wastewater in the petrochemical industry
The petrochemical industry is organized in four sectors: exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, transport, refining and marketing and distribution.   Royal Haskoning has a large number of references in this sector and is able to assist all customers with their water and wastewater issues. Opportunities for reuse of the effluent
As the effluent standards for municipal wastewater treatment plants are getting stricter, the Waterboards are investing more in technologies for wastewater treatment. These new technologies can drastically enhance the effluent quality, bringing new opportunities and possibilities for reuse of the effluent. This article is presented at the IWA congress “6th conference on wastewater reclamation and reuse for sustainability”. Download

The role of CBA in river basin management
Social cost-benefit analysis (CBA), even though it is applied intensively for prioritising the allocation of public spending, receives strong criticism. In this paper, based on experiences from Royal Haskoning, the role of CBA is discussed. It is assessed to what extent criticism focussing on e.g. environmental valuation, undervaluation of long term effects and innovations, and the neglect of irreversibilities can be dealt with. Moreover, a few challenges are formulated that may give CBA a stronger and less contested position. Download

The possibilities of toiletwastewater
The separate treatment of toiletwastewater (black water) offers the possibility to recover nutrients and energy. In a study Ellen van Voorthuizen compared the performance of three different biological treatment systems, an UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge bed) reactor with effluent filtration, and an anaerobic and aerobic MBR (membrane bioreactor). In the paper published in Water Research the biological and membrane performance of the three systems is described. Download

Joining forces to adapt deltas to climate change
Are there effective methods for making delta areas less vulnerable to global climate change? This is a pressing question in countries with densely populated coastal regions, where more than half the world’s population lives. Royal Haskoning is conducting Delta Dialogues worldwide in order to find answers. Download

Source-separating sanitation systems
Throughout the EU a large number of demonstration projects with source-separating sanitation systems have been realized in the past 15 years. In order to assess the potential of these systems for wide-scale application it is important to learn from these practical experiences. This research in Water Science & Technology (2007-5) evaluates two systems with local grey water treatment in the Netherlands and three sites with urine separation in Sweden. Download
