River and coastal management
In the southern basin of the Dead Sea, the Arab Potash Company operates a large evaporation schemes for the production of predominantly fertilizer.
The scheme consist of a number of pumping stations and a series of evaporation ponds with retaining dams of up to 12m high. The underground of the area is characterized by zones with very low shear strength, cavities and sinkholes, faults and layers of rock salt with overpressure and under pressure. The complex geology of the area and failure of some dikes resulted in the involvement of Royal Haskoning to prepare an approach for the investigation of the dams in 2000. This project continued hereafter with design, preparation of tender documents and supervision of several sections of the dikes.
