Water treatment
Kumasi - the second largest city in Ghana - has been suffering from frequent water shortages. In 2005, Royal Haskoning carried out a feasibility study for the expansion of Kumasi’s water supply system. The project received financial support from the Dutch ORET Fund and implementation started in 2007. The project was commissioned in early 2010 and the operational support phase will be completed in 2011.
Royal Haskoning was as a consultant to the construction contractor responsible for the complete detailed engineering design of the rehabilitation and expansion of two treatment plants providing water to Kumasi and the surrounding area. Expansion of transmission, distribution and storage systems was also designed and subsequently constructed. Construction cost amounted to 40 million euro. With a capacity of 120 MLD, the expanded system serves a population of about 1 million and provides some 30 percent of the potential water demand in the city.

In addition to the engineering design, Royal Haskoning prepared a Water Resources Master Plan and Water Supply Master Plan outlining the area’s water-related development until 2030. Under an operational support component, a digital office was set-up to manage the water supply company’s assets in a more controlled way using GIS and Database applications.
