Sustainable protection for drinking water abstraction sites

The Dutch provincial authorities have started, or are about to start, preparing 'area dossiers' to analyse the risks to drinking water abstraction sites and the measures needed to provide sustainable protection for those sites. The front-runner in this process is the province of Overijssel, which has asked Royal Haskoning for assistance in preparing the area dossiers.
When drawing up the dossiers, the ‘characteristics of the abstraction site' and the ‘characteristics of the threats' will be analysed in a systematic way. This work was prompted by the European Water Framework Directive, which states that water used in the production of drinking water and the different treatment stages must comply with the Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC). In addition, bodies of water must be protected in order to prevent deterioration of quality. This is a first step in the transition towards a sustainable drinking water supply. To develop this further, Royal Haskoning is supporting the provincial authority in the drawing up of management agreements for measures resulting from the area dossiers.
