Royal Haskoning and subcontractor BKS nominated for South African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) Steel Award for the Meerkat II project in Sasolburg, South Africa
06-07-2010
Royal Haskoning and Royal Haskoning subcontractor BKS have been nominated for the South African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) Steel Award for the Meerkat II project in Sasolburg, South Africa.

The nomination was based on the following considerations:
- An existing steel design for a process building based on European steel members had to be converted to a design based on South African steel profiles.
- The exchange of European steel members to South African steel members had to take place in 3 months which is an extremely short period of time given the sheer amount of steel (555 tonnes)
- The exchange had to allow for the fact that the piping, electrical and instrumention design in the process building was not to be impacted by the exchange. Due to the dimensional differences of the profiles an enormous number of clashes had to be resolved with the least amount of influence to the original design and within an extreme short period of time.
- The exchange had to allow for different legislation: in South Africa, process vessels need to be hydrotested in the steel structure whereas in Europe they can be tested in the shop; therefore the total steel construction had to be checked on extra loads due to the test water.
- In addition, the nomination referred to the international collaboration of Haskoning, BKS and the steel contractor as well as the special cladding system that was used for the project.
