Royal Haskoning helps Uruzgan with safe water supply

In helping to provide people in Uruzgan province (Afghanistan) access to safe drinking water, household food security, and sources of income while protecting them from the negative impacts of droughts and floods, the Dutch Embassy in Kabul has asked a consortium to carry out a study into the situation of Integrated Water Resources Management in Uruzgan. This consortium, led by Royal Haskoning, also comprises knowledge institute Deltares, Delft University of Technology and the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW).
Situated in the arid part of Afghanistan, the limited availability of water resources in Uruzgan poses constraints on the development potential of sectors like hydropower, drinking water, irrigation, agricultural productivity and livestock. In addition, the water availability is subject to considerable fluctuations throughout the year and between years. This situation has a large impact on the livelihoods of the local people.

The objective of the assignment is to provide insight into the water resources situation in Uruzgan province and to formulate a strategy for policy planning and implementation in order to improve the current situation. We expect to present the results of this strategic investigation at the end of this year to the Dutch Embassy in Kabul. The Dutch consortium will be supported by local experts and NGOs in Afghanistan.
