A method and a tool have been developed to assist the designers from the beginning of the design phase. The costs and benefits for different design options are calculated using Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and are presented in an insightful way to the stakeholders. Traditionally these calculations are only made by cost specialists at the end of the design phase, only quantifying a few design options in detail, instead of using these calculations in the early design stages to generate optimal design solutions.
The ’’Sustainable Building - Accelerator'' supports stakeholders to decide on sustainable solutions by giving them cost and benefit information of design solutions. This information provides them with valuable input to create their sound business cases.
This article, which was presented at the international conference ICEBO 2011 – New York, describes the concept and illustrates the added value of the ''Sustainable Building - Accelerator''.

Social cost-benefit analysis (CBA), even though it is applied intensively for prioritising the allocation of public spending, receives strong criticism. In this paper, based on experiences from Royal Haskoning, the role of CBA is discussed. It is assessed to what extent criticism focussing on e.g. environmental valuation, undervaluation of long term effects and innovations, and the neglect of irreversibilities can be dealt with. Moreover, a few challenges are formulated that may give CBA a stronger and less contested position.

This year the construction of the deep underground stations for the new Amsterdam metro line will start. As a part of the stations’ design a full scale test on the installation of diaphragm wall trenches has been carried out to investigate the impact on the environment. This paper discusses test program, test results, the interpretation of the test results and the 3D FE modelling that was used for prediction and validation purposes.
