Design and operation
Uncontrolled landfilling of waste is a threat for groundwater, surface water and natural resources. Therefore a sustained effort is needed to implement engineered landfills in the waste management programs and legislation.
Landfill design and operation is focused on emission control, groundwater protection and monitoring. Leachate out of the landfill body shall be collected and treated. Landfill gas (biogas) has to be extracted and can be utilized for energy recovery or shall be treated before emitted to the atmosphere. After operation the landfill shall be covered.

Royal Haskoning provides full support to closure of existing uncontrolled landfills and prepares closure designs for existing landfills according international standards.

Royal Haskoning provides full support to prepare and design modern sustainable landfill sites according to international standards and advises on construction, operation, closing and after-care of landfill sites.
